For users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, and those with work or school account and a M365 Copilot (Basic), or M365 Copilot (Premium) label, Copilot Chat is available side-by-side in select Microsoft 365 apps, starting with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. 

Tip: All users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, including all work or school account users can use Copilot Chat in Outlook.

With Copilot Chat, you get a unified chat experience that's consistent across the Microsoft 365 apps, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, and Microsoft Edge. You can open or close Copilot Chat in the Microsoft 365 apps by selecting Copilot in the app.

How Copilot Chat works in Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Excel 

Whether you have a Copilot add-on license or not will determine what Copilot capabilities you have in the Microsoft 365 apps. To use Copilot Chat in the apps, you need to be signed in with your work or school account.

Outlook

All subscribers have access to Copilot in Outlook. With Copilot Chat in Outlook, you can interact naturally with your inbox and calendar to get more done in less time.

What you can do with Copilot Chat in Outlook depends on whether or not your admin assigned a Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license to your work or school account.

Copilot Chat without an add-on license: If you don't have a Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license with your work or school account, you can use Copilot Chat in Outlook to ask questions about your inbox, calendar, meetings, and other limited data. Here are examples of the types of prompts you can use:

Copilot Chat with an add-on license: If you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license with your work or school account, you'll be able to use Copilot Chat in Outlook to interact with your inbox, calendar, meetings, chats, and enterprise data, using prompts such as:

Word

To access Copilot in Word you need a M365 Copilot (Basic), or M365 Copilot (Premium) label. Copilot Chat in Word helps you create, edit, and explore your documents with ease. You can ask questions about your document to quickly find details or clarify information, summarize or rewrite content to match your audience, and generate new text or expand on your ideas—all in one place. These features work together to help you work efficiently, boost productivity, and craft documents that are clear, accurate, and tailored to your goals.

PowerPoint

To access Copilot in PowerPoint you need a M365 Copilot (Basic), or M365 Copilot (Premium) label. With Copilot Chat in PowerPoint, you gain a range of capabilities that help make creating and refining presentations faster with more impact and understanding presentations more intuitive. You can easily ask questions about your presentation to quickly surface key information, summarize slides to capture the main points without having to review each one individually, and generate relevant images to enhance your visual storytelling. Additionally, Copilot Chat provides valuable insights into your presentation’s content and can help you prepare by generating potential questions the audience may ask, ensuring you deliver a well-organized and compelling presentation. These features are designed to help streamline your workflow, save you time, and empower you to create more engaging and effective presentations.

To access Copilot in Excel you need a M365 Copilot (Basic), or M365 Copilot (Premium) label. Copilot Chat in Excel lets you interact with your data in smarter, more intuitive ways. Instead of searching through spreadsheets manually, you can ask questions to quickly uncover insights, analyze trends, and identify patterns. Copilot Chat helps you create clear visualizations and provides valuable answers right from the side pane, making your analysis accurate and accessible. These features streamline your workflow and empower you to present data confidently and effectively.

Here are some ways that you can use Copilot Chat in Excel:

If you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you also get access to advanced AI features in Excel both directly in the spreadsheet and by selecting Agent Mode from the Tools menu. Agent Mode is great for complex, multi-step tasks like reshaping data, merging sheets, or building reports with multiple elements.​​​​​​​

Whether you’re taking meeting notes, brainstorming, or organizing research, Copilot Chat helps you make sense of your content on the page you’re working on. You can ask it to summarize notes, create to-do lists, or draft project plans based on your content. It’s a smart way to turn your notes into clear, actionable steps and stay organized with ease.
