Chapter 3: Zooming and panning

Zoom in, zoom out, and set your zoom level

Zoom on the fly:

  • Zoom in: Windows key+Plus sign (+)
  • Zoom out: Windows key+Minus sign (−)
  • Zoom with the mouse wheel: hold Ctrl+Alt and scroll
  • Toggle between your set magnification and 1× (normal size): Ctrl+Alt+Minus sign (−)

Using more than one monitor? Zoom changes apply to the screen your pointer is on. See [Use Magnifier with multiple monitors].

Set your default zoom level and step size:

  1. Select Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier.
  2. Use the Zoom level buttons to choose how much Magnifier enlarges the screen when it turns on.
  3. Open the Zoom increments dropdown to choose how much the zoom changes each time you zoom in or out (for example, 25%, 50%, or 100% per step). Smaller increments give you finer control; larger increments get you there faster.

Change the step size from the Magnifier toolbar: You can also change zoom increments without leaving what you're doing. On the Magnifier toolbar, select the Settings button (the gear icon), then choose a new step size from the Zoom increments dropdown.

With Narrator and a keyboard:

  1. Press Windows key+Ctrl+M to open the Magnifier settings.
  2. Press Tab until you hear "Zoom out" or "Zoom in," followed by the current zoom level. Press Spacebar to change the level. Narrator announces the new value.
  3. Press Tab until you hear "Zoom increments," followed by the current increment. Press Alt+Down arrow to open the dropdown, use the Up or Down arrow key to choose an increment, then press Enter.

Move around the screen while zoomed in

When you're zoomed in, only part of the screen is visible at once. "Panning" is how you move the magnified area:

  • With the mouse: Move the pointer toward the edge of the screen in the direction you want to go.

  • With the keyboard: Press Ctrl+Alt+arrow keys to pan up, down, left, or right. In docked view, this moves the dock to that edge of the screen instead of panning.

Peek at the whole screen: In full screen view, press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar to temporarily see the entire desktop, then release to return to your zoomed view.
